Chapter History
During a return trip from AIA Grassroots in 1979, Lee Bearsch, Jim Bryden, and Peter Trozze discussed the possibility of forming a southern tier chapter of the American Institute of Architects. At that time, the area that is now the Southern New York Chapter (called Area II) was part of the Central New York Chapter, which generally held its meetings in Syracuse. Attendance of Area II architects at the CNY meetings was sparse.
George Pash worked to hold regular local meetings of Binghamton architects in the 1970s, and in a special meeting on June 28, 1979 the decision to form "a separate and distinct chapter" was made. After securing the approvals for separation from the Central New York Chapter and new chapter status from National AIA, the Southern New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects was established in the fall of 1979.
Although the chapter is young, it has developed a rich history, conducting many excellent programs for its members and involving its members in leadership activities including roles at the state and national level. Other efforts include community outreach to students in the Architectural Awareness Program and recognition of the talent of this area with the Design Awards Program.
